11/25/08    v1.2 Fixes Southern Hemisphere Courses (iPhone)

GolfTraxx iPhone edition (v1.2) was approved this afternoon and fixes availability of courses in the Southern Hemisphere on the iPhone.  Now that spring is in the air for our community members in many countries south of the Equator, we are ecstatic that this fix is in place.  Drop us a note to let us know that it is working.  

GolfTraxx on the BlackBerry STORM (Sunday 11/23/08 update)

The BlackBerry STORM by RIM (Research In Motion) hit the street with a bang this past Friday, and at least one member of the GolfTraxx community had GolfTraxx as one (if not THE) first 3rd-party application up and running.   So, without any further commentary, here is the quote from the user:

I would put it back in my BlackBerry case with magnet between shots and it would come back from sleep mode easily. No question that it works on the Storm and VZW without VZNav running.

Albert, THANK YOU for helping us out and, you are quite welcome.  I had fun walking you through the process of removing VZNav.  = )  You have a really cool phone and I hope you have a lot of good rounds using GolfTraxx on your Storm.  For anyone else that is getting a Storm, the GolfTraxx 88xx version loads up and you do not need to purchase VZNav to use GolfTraxx.

End of the Season

This past week marks the end of the regular season in the golf world. The Walt Disney Magnolia course saw Davis Love III win his 20th tour victory, earning him a LIFETIME PGA Tourcard. Among active players on the tour only three guys have more than 20 wins. Tiger Woods with 65, Phil Mickelson with 34, and Vijay Singh also with 34. Nice company to be in, and this almost assures Davis a spot in the the Hall of Fame. Now not to give too much away about just how much golf I watch... but Tommy "two gloves" Gainey of The Golf Channel's reality show The Big Break was the runner up. Tommy is a country kid from South Carolina who pretty much taught himself how to hit a golf ball after his baseball career ended. Anyways, he's got game and JUMPED from the mid 200s on the money list to 151st. That also got him into the final round of Q-School, and a few more guaranteed starts next year on tour.

Hall of Fame

Going on with the Hall of Fame, an equally loved and hated course designer was inducted this year. None other than Pete Dye who gave the PGA tour the dreaded 17th at TPC Sawgrass. Turns out his wife (an accomplished designer and better player than Pete), came up with the idea of the 'island green'. Where Pete likes to move mounds of earth to give us a golf course, we at GolfTraxx have spent the last week moving mounds of data around for your golf courses. In fact, nearly every course has in some way been moved, adjusted or updated at least twice this past week. We have more to work on, but the results so far have been very, very solid. When you move that much data, sometimes things can go awry. So if you come across a course that seems to have stopped working, please let us know. We’ll get it fixed right away. We are well aware of issues on our iPhone version impacting the Southern Hemisphere and are testing our latest version for the iPhone that addresses it.

DJ Gregory Walks 1,000 - No Complaints allowed Added (11/23/08)  

So I just read the story of DJ Gregory and his journey walking every hole of every round plus playoffs of the 2008 PGA tour.  This is an AMAZING story as DJ was born ten weeks early and with severe cerebral palsy.  He walked almost 1,000 miles!  His story is an inspiration to us all.  I think I will forgo the cart for a while.

Another VERY strong couple weeks of courses with over 80 new courses added this week. The International courses included beautiful courses in Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy and France. Its Ryder Cup Week

Update - US Wins, Faldo gets dragged through the mud

I really feel for Nick Faldo and think that captaining any Ryder Cup team is looking like a thankless job. Nick might want to give a call to Billy Martin as Billy might have some advice on how to deal with unreasonable management and idiotic press.

Here's how I see it. Nick didn't miss a single put, didn't shank any shots left, right or in the drink. He didn't get get crushed by a rookie or (lets give credit where credit is due) score more points than the guys who 'made it on merit' as a captain's selection.

To the US team - Good showing! To the European team, congratulations on keeping a stiff upper lip. To the southern boys - Thanks for keeping us entertained! (see video above.)


Ryder Cup - US in the lead near the half way mark & it is getting loud in KY.

I read a post that asked an interesting question. Why do Americans shout "in-the-hole" at the first shot of a 500yard par five? Well, other than the obvious answer [beer], todays Ryder Cup set-up gives us a glimpse into the future. They are playing three different 500y+ par 4s at Valhalla, and JB Holmes just crushed a 380y drive followed up with a 230y SIX iron to within six feet on a 600y par 5. A 500y drive might be possible some day in the future?

The galleries are huge and loud and the US team is giving them lot to cheer about. Lets hope the event stays exciting and doesn't get ugly. A blow-out will lose TV audiences pretty quick without Tiger in the fairways.

In the Golf world, seems that even though it is just August, the talk is moving to the playoffs and the Ryder Cup. The other interesting talk is the question – "Should golf be reinstated as an Olympic sport?" I personally LOVE the spirit of the Olympic Movement and say YES, bring back Golf. BUT, not like basketball or tennis. Seems the IOC likes big (pro) names in the Olympics because that sells tickets, sells broadcasting rights, etc. I am a bit of a purist and say lets bring back the ideals of the Amateur, and give the spotlight to the national junior champions as their entry to the Olympics.
